How well does learning acoustic guitar translate to playing an electric bass guitar?

I want to learn how to play an electric bass guitar but right now all that is possible for me is to learn an acoustic guitar. How much would learning to play an acoustic guitar help me learn to play an electric bass guitar in the future.

Both have strings, and a neck with frets. After that the resemblance largely ends. Bass is a very different beast in terms of its physical proportions, and the playing techniques and role in the music is very different from an acoustic guitar.

Why isn’t it possible to learn bass now? You can get them as cheap as acoustics from http://www.rondomusic.com or used ones on craigslist.

Very well because you will have learnt finger movements. Besides it has two less strings to deal with!

not much… acoustic is either finger styling of strumming, bass guitar is neither. but it should help you be familiar with the strings and with fretting notes

Well you can learn the basics about notes and stuff… maybe some simple scale and arpeggio patterns… but bass is a totally different instrument. Technique-wise there’s hardly anything in common between them.

It’s a lot easier! You will only have the E, A, D, and G strings. There will be no chords, so you don’t have to remember the fingerings only single note riffs. If you do fingerstyle now, it’s going to be a lot easier because bass players usually don’t use picks.
